That’s a dirty trick if Panasonic won’t let you used aftermarket batteries — I have an aftermarket battery for my current Lumix camera and it works great. Anybody got a Dell coupon code. Had this camera and returned it. What is happening is that the camera is cropping the image when you lower the MP and this gives it an appearance of greater optical zoom.

Its just an illusion that you get more optical zoom. Any current owners running into the same issue. My only problem with the camera is that I heard that a spare battery is almost impossible to order. Passed along the info to some friends.
